Bobbin Lace

On March 3rd 2012 the Fredericksburg Spinning and Weavers Guild hosted a presentation on bobbin lace by member Margaret Campbell and members of the Piedmont Lace Guild.  Bobbin lace is considered a “true” lace fiber art it’s history is long and storied.  The art form is experiencing a bit of a resurgence.  Bobbin lace can be an extremely intricate and delicate form of lace.  Below are some pictures of the bobbin lace tools and equipment and of me trying to make lace.  The experience is much different that knitting lace.  I’m not a weaver, but I can imagine that bobbin lace and weaving have some similarities.

Studio setup and other stuff

I’ve been putting together a studio for a lack of a better word.  A place that I can work on my spinning, knitting and sewing.  I got everything setup over the summer, and now it’s also become my photography studio too.  I didn’t realize how much I was going to want to take pictures of the yarns I create or the objects that I knit, but the photo bug kind of bit me pretty hard after reading Ashley Martineau post from Neauveau Fiber Arts on Build[ing] your own Photography Lightbox for $37.  It’s such a simple thing really and it made such a difference in my photos.  Now I just need to get a better camera.  Right now my cell phone camera is better than my real camera if you can believe that.  Here is what my studio and light box look like:

And here is an example of the types of photos I can take using my new lightbox and my cell phone camera:

Even I think this Apple accessory is cute…

OK, so I’m not an Apple fan, but I even have to admit that this is pretty cute.  Today is GEEK day on Etsy.  If you don’t know what Etsy is, think of it as an online craft fair.  It’s petty neat.  So today, Etsy is featuring products for the inner geek and nerd.  For example, this vinyl decal for a MacBook.  There are also butterfly pins out of circuit boards, knit hand warmers that look like WoW gauntlets, and Star Wars themed products just to name a few.  I particularly like this theme because it appeals to both my geeky and crafty natures.
