Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center and Old Town Yarnery Announce
Yarn Bombing at the Museum
Fredericksburg, VA –The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center and Old Town Yarnery invite you to our Yarn Bombing event on Friday, November 2 at 5:00 pm. This fall the Museum will commission a yarn bombing of two lamp posts and a bench near the Museum as part of the city-wide celebration of fiber art. The Museum has asked local knitwear designer and knitting instructor of worldknits.com and Old Town Yarnery to coordinate this temporary installation which will be on display from November 2 thru December 15.
Local knitters and crocheters of all levels are invited to help participate in this installation by creating bright colorful swatches in sizes 2”x4″, 4”x4″, 4”x6″, and 4”x8″ in the pattern and yarn of their choice. Participants may pick up extra yarn and drop off their swatches at Old Town Yarnery at 205 William Street. As part of this program, the Museum will host a Knit-in on October 18 in the Mansard Gallery from 6-8pm. Seaming of the swatches will take place on Thursday, November 1 from 3-6pm in the Museum’s Learning Center and installation of the work will take place on November 2 at 5:00 pm during First Friday. Museum admission is free for this event from 5-8pm. Visitors are invited to see our other textile exhibits, Community Artist Series: Fiber Art in the Museum’s Mansard Gallery and Quilt National in the Council Chamber of historic Town Hall. Yarn bombing is a type of street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fiber on trees, signs, lamp posts, benches and other public forms. Yarn bombing, also known as urban knitting is a fun and colorful form of contemporary fiber art meant as both a personalization of public spaces and community beautification. Visitors are encouraged to touch the display.
